It’s a quick return to action and to our new ‘home’ surroundings of Firhill for the Spiders on Saturday as fellow cinch League One side Airdrieonians visit on Premier Sports Cup duty. Laurie Ellis’ side will undoubtedly be looking to build on the very encouraging performance that saw them give Premiership side Motherwell a run for their money midweek and in doing so, add to the three points taken at Palmerston last weekend.
Ahead of the game Laurie spoke to the club media team and said: “The games are coming thick and fast just now and it will be another tough test against a strong Airdrie side on Saturday. We are expecting a really difficult season in cinch League One this season given the amount of good teams that we will be up against, such as Airdrie.”
“We know it will be a different type of challenge to what we faced against Motherwell on Wednesday but it’s one that we will go into looking to give it our all.”
“It is obviously an opportunity to go up against a side we will face in the league this season and that is useful but like every other game we will play this season, we are going to have to go into it with our A game.”
“It is also another opportunity to familiarise ourselves with our new surroundings at Firhill and use the playing surface to our advantage like we tried to do on Wednesday night. We had lots of good moments in that game but we can’t forget the fact that we took nothing from it. It’s now important that we look to capitalise on those good moments when we have them in this game.”
On the squad front the gaffer was delighted to confirm the return of Bob McHugh, commenting: “We are delighted to have Bob back available again. His experience is a welcome boost to the squad and it’s safe to say he has been frustrated over the last few weeks as he has tried to get over a niggling injury. He is a good professional who goes about his business in the right manner and a great example to the young players in the squad.”
