The pioneering role Queen’s Park played in establishing football in Glasgow, Scotland and then the world has been captured in the Spiders’ dazzling new third strip which was launched today with the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity set to benefit.
The new ‘Spirit of Glasgow’ kit has been designed in conjunction with club sponsor Scotts Menswear, and will be worn in appropriate games this season with supporters able to buy them now.
Queen’s, who are Scotland’s oldest club, were formed on 9 July 1867 in the south-side of Glasgow and flourished in their home city by establishing rules and creating the Scottish Football Association.
As well as helping football get established in Glasgow the club supplied all of the players (and the strips) for the world’s first ever international match when Scotland hosted England in Partick just over 150 years ago.
The new ‘tartan-esqe’ outfit also proudly features a Scottish saltire and today’s 264th Anniversary of the birth of National Bard, Robert Burns, is the perfect day to announce its arrival.
Kieran Koszary, Head of Commercial at Queen’s Park, said: “We have been working with Scotts on this new kit since our partnership began last year and we are delighted with the outcome. Like Queen’s Park, Scotts is proud of the roots it has put down in Glasgow.”
“When the club was formed it was able to use the vibrancy and people of Glasgow to make connections, play games and grow both their standing and the game itself. The ‘Spirit of Glasgow’ kit captures that vibrancy and energy as well as Queen’s Park’s role with the national side.”
“Robert Burns died in 1796 so never got to see Queen’s Park play however I am sure he would have written a lot of positive prose about the club since 1867.”
“I am delighted to advise that all profits that the club makes from the sale of the kit will be donated to Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. The fact that all profits will be donated to such a fantastic cause is very much in keeping with the “Spirit of Glasgow”.
Kirsten Watson, CEO of Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity said: “We are delighted to have the wonderful support of Queen’s Park FC with this exciting kit launch. Thanks to their support, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity can continue working tirelessly to ensure that young patients receive the extra special care they deserve at our city’s children’s hospital. The hospital is close to the hearts of people from across Glasgow, and we’d like to thank the fans and everyone at the club for their generosity.”
