Livingston 0 Queen’s Park 3

An opening goal by Josh Howe and a brace by Lucas McCormick saw Queen’s Under 18s progress to the 3rd round of the Scottish Youth Cup on Friday night at the Toni Macaroni Arena.

A perfect night for football at the Toni Macaroni Arena. Dry, almost no wind and not too cold. Queen’s made the trip along to M8 to take on Livingston in the second round of the Scottish Youth Cup (The young Spiders received a bye in the first round). The last time the two sides met, at the start of October, Queen’s came 4-0 winners.

Head coach Charley King made four changes from the starting eleven who beat Inverness Caley Thistle last week. Bringing in Liam Russell, Liam Mcvey, Luke Lickrish and Trialist to the starting eleven.

Livingston started the game strongly and dominated the opening five minutes without causing the Queen’s defence any real problems.

After that opening period, Queen’s began to establish their presence in the game with balls over the Livingston defence for Timam Scott, wide right and Dom Brady, wide left to run onto. Dom Brady, in particular, was causing the Livi defence all sorts of problems with his electric pace.

The game was now being played in the Livingston half and Queen’s had now upped the pace of their game in terms of both passing and running.

In the sixth minute a superb diagonal ball to Timam Scott allowed Timam to turn inside and shoot, only to see his effort blocked for a corner.

Three minutes later Queen’s took the lead. The ball was played wide right for Lucas McCormick to run onto. Lucas beat his marker and cut the ball back across the Livingston six yard box for Josh Howe to step onto and smash the ball into the roof of the next from 12 yards out. A well worked and executed goal.

Whether it was the goal or Queen’s settling into the game, they were, by now, playing a very high tempo game that Livingston were struggling to cope with.

In the 14th minute Dom Brady turned on the afterburners to race past two defenders, however the ball crossed the byeline before Dom could reach it.

In the 23rd minute Queen’s were awarded a penalty when Timam Scott was upended at the edge of the Livi box. Penalty taker Lucas McCormick stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to take the score to 2-0 for the Spiders.

Queen’s continued to dominate play. In the midfield, Euan Ross and Liam Mcvey, in particular were in charge, playing balls behind the Livi defence for the pacy forwards to run onto.

In the 30th minute another superb crossfield ball for Timan Scott to run onto. Timan got behind the full back, cut inside and fired hit a great shot which narrowly missed the far post.

Two minutes later the Livingston keeper pulled off a fantastic save from a Josh Howe header from 12 yards out.

Livingston began to get more of the ball in the final five minutes of the half without really testing the Queen’s defence.

As with the start of the first half Livingston had most of the possession for the first ten minutes of the second half.

In the 55th minute a defence splitting through ball allowed Lucas McCormick to get to the byeline before cutting the ball back the Livingston goal which was just out of reach of in-rushing Timam Scott.

In the 62nd minute Queen’s added a third. A superb run down the left wing by Dom Brady who then cut the ball back to Lucas McCormick to step onto and slot the ball into the net from 14 yards out.

In the 65th minute Queen’s replaced Josh Howe and Euan Ross with Jamie Bradley and Trialist.

Five minutes later after a superb passing move involving may players, Liam Mcvey played the ball over the Livingston defence for Trialist to run onto but the ball was just out of his reach.

In the 73rd minute Queen’s replaced Liam Mcvey and Luke Lickrish with Michael Collie and Trialist.

In the 77th minute after some great inter-passing by Lucas McCormick and Jojo Smith, Jojo beat two players then got to the bye line and sent in a cross. Lucas McCormick got to the cross but his header cleared the bar.

In the 84th minute Queen’s replaced Timam Scott with Connor Falls.

In the final five minutes of the game the Queen’s defence, which has been solid all night, started to make a few mistakes. Whether it was a lack of concentration or tiredness after a pretty full pace 85 minutes, some of passes out of defence went astray. Fortunately for Queen’s, Livingston were unable to capitalise on the mistakes.
