Match Preview: Queen’s Park vs Montrose

A week on from our memorable return to Hampden and the 4-0 league win over Hamilton Accies, the Spiders again return to the National Stadium. This time it’s on SPFL Trust Trophy duty as League One side Montrose visit in the fourth round.

Ahead of the game, Owen Coyle spoke to the club media team and gave his thoughts.

“The game is obviously a break from league business but that changes nothing in terms of what we want to get out of it. With it being a cup competition there is a freshness about it and as with any cup competition, we obviously want to go as far as we can. We know that to do that we are going to have to play well against a good Montrose side.”

“They are a side that we know really well from last season and they are a side who obviously finished ahead of us in the table last season, before the play-offs. It could easily have been Montrose we faced in that play-off final instead if Airdrie earlier in the year. They are a good side, managed by a good manager in Stewart Petrie. Stewart is someone I know well, he is an ex-teammate and he has a squad that has a good mixture of experience, with players who have played at the top level, and also some good exciting young talent.”

“Being back at home, in front of our own fans again is what it’s all about and it’s a cup tie that we are all relishing.”

“We are obviously going into the game with the momentum of recent results behind us and it goes without saying that we will be looking for that to continue, however, as I have said before and I will say again, we don’t just want to win games. First and foremost we want our performances to be at a high level and we know that when we are at those levels, it will lead to more wins.”.

“The focus must remain on looking to pass and move the ball around and to develop that style of play that we look to continue to implement.”

“The game will also be an opportunity for one or to players to come in. There’s are one or two who we will leave out completely but that presents the opportunity for those who come in, to show what they are capable of. In the main, we know it will be another tough game, but it’s one we will be going out there to try and win.”
