Motherwell 4 Queen’s Park 0

Two goals by Motherwell in each half saw the Steelmen take all three points in the opening SPFL Reserve League game of the season

Young Queen’s Park head coach Owen Coyle made three changes from the side that played St Mirren last week; Mauchin, Nicol and McLeish replacing Trialist, McPake and Connolly.

The experienced Motherwell side started the game strongly pinning the young Spiders in their own half for the opening five minutes.

Six minutes into the game Louis Longridge made Well keeper Oxborough work with a shot from the edge of the box after, first, good work down the left wing by Cammy Bruce who played the ball to Lewis Moore. Then Lewis who laid the ball to Louis for the shot.

25 minutes into the game Jacques Heraghty had to look sharp to push a Mahon deflection which looked goal bound.

Three minutes later Motherwell opened the scoring. A slack backpass was pounced upon by Shields who forced a good save from Heraghty, but from the resulting loose ball Aarons returned the ball across the Queen’s six yard box for O’DONNELL to fire home.

Queen’s Park hit back with some superb midfield passing between Liam Brown and Louis Longridge which resulted in Cammy Bruce bombing down the left wing before delivering the ball to the head of Lewis Moore inside the ‘Well box. Lewis’ header looked a winner, but Oxborough dived low to his right to push the ball away from danger.

Just before half-time, Mahon doubled Motherwell’s lead. Aarons played the ball right to Maguire who pulled the ball back across goal for MAHON to score from eight yards out.

Queen’s replaced McLeish with McCormick at the break.

The Young Spider stared the second period on the front foot. They pushed Motherwell back and created a number of chances with Nicol and Jarrett both having shots which were blocked by the well organised Motherwell back line.

Unfortunately for Queen’s it was from a block to a shot that led to Motherwell’s third goal. Ross picked up the loose ball and drove forward and found Mahon. His pass found the overlapping full-back Gould who fired past Heraghty.

Despite the setback Queen’s continued to press for a goal. The midfield were getting on the ball and moving it about the lush Fir Park playing surface, but couldn’t find a way through the ‘Well defence.
