Queen’s Park 1 Boroughmuir Thistle 2

Despite taking the lead, poor defending cost Queen's the game against Boroughmuir Thistle yesterday at Toryglen.

Coach Barry Rodgers made two changes to the starting 11 from the previous game against Dundee United, Nicole Cairney and Gill Sloey replaced by Summer Christie and Eve Payne.

A warm, sunny, but windy day greeted the two teams as they warmed up on the big Toryglen pitch.

Queen’s started the game well, using the width of the pitch to allow Rachel Connor and Eleanor Smith to attack down the wings.

In the 7th minute Queen’s got a scare when a Boroughmuir attack resulted in a goalmouth clearance.

A minute later Queen’s survived another Boroughmuir attack. This time Maria Novou Torrente received the ball from a cross wide right, turned and hit the far post with her shot

In the seventeenth minute Queen’s opened the scoring. Abby Callaghan set up Rachel Connor with a great through ball for Rachel to step onto, dribbled into the Boroughmuir box, draws the keeper and slots the ball past the advancing keeper into the net. A well worked goal.

Two minutes later, Queen’s had a chance go double their lead. Rachel Connor intercepted Boroughmuir pass, played in Sophie Payne who beat two defenders before shooting only to be denied by good goalkeeping by Katie Moodie.

Four minutes later Abby Callaghan, who has been involved in most of the Queen’s attacks, played in Rachel Connor again. It was an almost exact copy of her goal but this time the Boroughmuir keeper pulled off a great save.

In the 36th minute Boroughmuir were level. From an attack down the right, the ball was cut back to Courtney McAvoy who scored from 20 yards out.

Queen’s, who were playing with the wind to their backs, almost took the lead within a minute of the re-start. Once again, it was Rachel Connor who broke through the Boroughmuir defence, but this time the ball ran on and the Boroughmuir keeper blocked the attack

In the 54th minute Boroughmuir took the lead. From a Queen’s attack Boroughmuir broke fast down the right. Mhari Smith raced to the bye line before cutting the ball back for Sammy Duncan to slot the ball home.
