Queen’s Park 1 Gartcairn 2

Despite taking an early lead, Queen's lost their second game in a row at a wet and windy New Tinto Park on Sunday.

It was a miserable afternoon at New Tinto Park on Sunday as Queen’s Park and Gartcairn battled the howling wind and heavy showers. Unfortunately, the game would match the weather conditions.

Queen’s Park made 2 changes to their team from last time out against Montrose; Ellie Kane and Caitlin McKee dropped to the bench to be replaced by Abbi McDonald and Sarah Macleod as the Spiders looked to bounce back from their disappointment last week.

Gartcairn started on the front foot. Within the first 5 minutes, they would come close from a corner, and a Dionne Brown freekick had Lauren Grant working to make sure saw the effort go wide of the goal.

Lyndsey Holmes would be next to test Grant in goal but the ‘keeper was equal to the effort. Holmes would then try her luck from distance shortly after, but this time the effort didn’t trouble Grant.

Despite the earlier pressure from the visitors, it would be Queen’s Park who struck first. Jaya Gill’s pin-point corner delivery was met by Eleanor Smith who converted for her 3rd goal in 3 games.

After Smith’s goal, neither team could gain control of the game. Nicole Cairney was next to create a chance with her effort from outside the box, but Niamh Miller was there to gather the ball.

31 minutes in, Gartcairn would find their route back into the game. Lauren Kerr had the time to cross the ball into the box. Her cross evaded everyone and was met at the back post by Holmes who volleyed the ball into the net.

Half Time: Queen’s Park 1-1 Gartcairn

The 2nd half couldn’t have got off to a worse start for the Spiders. Kerr picked up a misplaced pass, she passed to Caitlin Moran who gave Kerr the ball back and from the edge of the box she was able to find the net.

Immediately after the restart, Cairney played an excellent ball through for Gill. Gill was through and goal when she was brought down by ‘Cairn’s last defender Jane O’Toole. O’Toole receiving a yellow card for her last player challenge. Abby Callaghan’s freekick was deflected wide by the defensive wall.

The worsening weather didn’t help the match much. For long periods of the 2nd half, neither team was able to have sustained pressure, or even sustained periods of possession. A few corner here and there for both teams gave the opportunity to threaten, but neither side was able to capitalise.
