A wonder strike in the 77th minute by Aiden McGinlay gave the wee Spiders all three points in Friday's CAS Elite Under 18 League game against Motherwell at Lochinch.

Both sides cancelled each other out in a tense encounter with defences on top and chances on goal few and far between.

It was a beautiful autumn day for football. Dry, little wind and no rain.

The opening ten minutes saw neither side dominate play. Connor Falls and Danny Mathieson were working hard to get beyond a well organised ‘Well midfield with Aiden McGinlay beginning to stretch the back line.

In the 20th minute Queen’s were awarded a free-kick at the edge of the box. Connor Falls hit the shot, which was easily gathered by Jack McConnell, in goal for the Steelmen.

Ten minutes later Sam MacLachlan had a shot from 20 yards out which, once again, the ‘Well keeper expertly dealt with.

The second half continued where the first left off, with midfield dominant and neither side building any momentum in attack. A series of petty fouls on both sides continued to disrupt the flow of the game.

In the 67th minute Trialist intercepted a pass out of the Motherwell defence, drove to the byline, cut the ball back for Aidan McGinlay to shoot only to see the ball hit the bar.

Queen’s were now putting the Steelmen under pressure and were rewarded in the 77th minute with a goal. A corner from the left was delivered to the edge of the box for AIDAN MCGINLAY to smash the ball into the roof of the net.

Motherwell responded and pushed up the park in an attempt to draw level. The Queen’s defence stood firm and prevented any real chances.

Five minutes from time Milosz Sliwinski pulled off a superb save, diving low to his right to deny an almost certain equaliser.
