Queen’s Park 2 St Johnstone 1

First half goals from Abby Callaghan and Jaya Gill ensured Queen’s made it back to back wins in SWLP 2

Queen’s were looking to build on their win two week ago at Rugby Park and move up the table. St Johnstone were looking to bounce back from their draw with East Fife.

Head coach Craig Joyce made three changes from the side that beat Kilmarnock two weeks ago. Hannah Fulton, Jaya Gill and Sarah MacLeod replaced Ellie Kane, Yasmin Boyce and Lia Tweedie. Rachel Caddell returned to the bench.

The weather was fine for football, cool, dry and almost no wind.

The game started with both sides battling for domination. Three minutes in Nicole Cairney was pulled back while she was on a run down the right wing. Jaya Gill played the free kick right on top of the St Johnstone keeper who did well to prevent the ball going into the net.

Five minutes later, Nicole Cairney, once again, raced past the full back and cut the ball across the goal but unfortunately a defender blocked Abby Callaghan’s shot.

In the 14th minute Queen’s nearly opened the scoring. A great move started by Abbi McDonald who played the ball to Sarah MacLeod. Sarah then laid the ball off to Abby Callaghan who beat the advancing keeper with her shot only to see the ball cleared off the line by St Johnstone’s Cowie, then the keeper.

Four minutes later Queen’s did take the lead. Good build up play from the back saw Jaya Gill play a diagonal ball over the St Johnstone defence for Abby Callaghan to get to the ball before the defencer, round the keeper and slot the ball into the empty net.

In the 20th minute Lauren Grant pulled off a great save to prevent St Johnstone equalising.

Queen’s were by now well on top. In the 23rd minute Jaya Gill scored her first goal for the club. Nicole Cairney chased a loose clearance header down the right wing, beat a defender and swung the ball into the edge of the six yard box for Jaya to step onto and smash the ball past the keeper into the net.

Queen’s continued to control the game giving St Johnstone very little opportunities to attack.

Despite creating a number of chances, Queen’s went in at the interval only 2-0 up.

St Johnstone came back out determined to get back into the game. However Queen’s were equally determined not to let their advantage slip.

As in the first half it was Queen’s who were creating the chances. In the first five minutes of the half both Nicole Cairney and Abby Callaghan got shots in.

In the 56th minute St Johnstone pulled a goal back. From a free kick 40 yards out the ball was floated into the Queen’s box for Ellie Cowie to head the ball over Lauren Grant into net.

St Johnstone attempted to build on their goal and Queen’s had to stay compact and disciplined in a period of intense pressure from the Perth side.

They weathered the storm and in the 61st minute created another great chance. Sarah Macleod picked up a blocked clearance, played in Abby Callaghan who shot low to the keeper’s left only to see Sidey pull off a fine save.

Ten minutes later Lauren Grant denied St Johnstone once more when she blocked a shot from Newbigging when she was through on goal.

In the 80th minute Abbi McDonald had a chance to put the game beyond St. Johnstone when she was though on goal, but her shot was saved by the St Johnstone keeper. From the corner Eleanor Smith headed narrowly past the far post.

Two minutes later Queen’s replaced Abby Callaghan with trialist.

In the 87th minute Lauren Chisholm replaced Jaya Gill.

St Johnstone really put the Queen’s defence under pressure in the final five minutes with a series of corners. But the defence stood tall and saw the game out.
