CHARLEY KING’S Spiders continued their unbeaten start to the CAS Advanced Youth League with a comfortable home win over Elgin City.
The 3-0 victory was the first of a Sunday afternoon double over the northern side, with the Wee Spiders in the under-17s also racking up an impressive scoreline later on at Lochinch.
Queen’s Park led at half-time thanks to a corner-kick routine – planned on the training ground and executed well by Jamie Bradley and Connor Falls.
Bradley was one of a number of first-team squad members who featured having missed out on match minutes the day before in Airdrie.
That gave coach Charley King a re-shuffle to include as many as he could and, with an abundance of midfield options at his disposal, the under-19s team looked a little different to usual.
However the outcome followed the game pattern as the previous and two second half goals from Josiah Sowa capped a fantastic weekend for the first-team debutant.
He stole ahead of the Elgin defence to score at the front post for his first and then was in the right place at the right time to convert on the rebound for the Spiders’ third.
That’s how it finished despite plenty of possession and coach Charley King was satisfied with another win.
He said: “This was another game where we dominated the ball and controlled the game – they didn’t have many chances.
“We had a few guys down from the first-team, and with their game on Saturday there wasn’t really a chance for us to work with the group going into the game. So it felt a little disjointed.
“We had a lot of players within the same positions too, and we tried something different to fit them all in. We did it and probably managed fairly well on the ball, although we didn’t create as much as we’d like in the first half.
“We did score from a set-piece which was good, something we’d worked on. Then two goals for Josiah ensured it was a good weekend for him.
“After that we were maybe a little disappointed we couldn’t push for another couple of goals in the last half hour but we saw the game out.
“But as I said there were a lot of midfielders and that probably reflected in the game – we kept it well without providing as much threat as we’d like and that’s what we will look to do next and get a couple of different players in and into more attacking areas.”
The under-17s followed the win up with an incredible 12-0 win later in the afternoon.
Coach Lee Mitchell said: “We’ve been looking for this performance from the boys this season – it was a really clinical performance.
“It would have been easy for them to lapse and get complacent in the game when we were so comfortable, but the team showed a great attitude throughout the game.
“Obviously we have also discussed goal difference previously and it’s obviously pleasing to see that column improve too.”
The under-17s host Motherwell in friendly on Friday evening at Lochinch followed by a trip to Falkirk in the league on September 5.
