QUEEN’S PARK under-19s helped the Spiders youth sides complete a ‘double-double’ tonight in Montrose.
A 4-1 win in the north-east secured the Club Academy Scotland Advanced Youth League title for the under-19s – to match the under-17s achievement last week.
Not only that, the victory for Charley King’s side completes a league and cup double – a feat also achieved by Lee Mitchell’s side this week.
It has been an incredibly successful season for the youth teams at Lochinch – who combined as under-18s for a historic Scottish Youth Cup run, achieving the club’s first ever final place.
That ended in defeat to Hearts however Charley King’s side ensured the season finished on a high at Links Park with a convincing win to round off the campaign and the top league split.
Recent defeat to Falkirk and a draw with title rivals Partick Thistle meant a win was necessary on the road in a packed fixture schedule, and the Young Spiders came up trumps and banked the league trophy alongside the CAS Cup picked up in Ayr a fortnight ago.
Tyrece McDonnell scored a double then, and was duly on the scoresheet again on Tuesday evening.
His strike added to a fantastic hat-trick for Ross McLean that sealed the deal and the title for the Young Spiders.
Charley King said: “We looked like a team who wanted to win a league tonight. We started the game really well with the intensity and dominated early on to score two goals.
“Montrose put us under pressure and scored maybe a fortuitous goal towards the end of the half. We had to change some things at half-time but after the third went in we looked comfortable.
“I think we deserve it. I think we’ve been the best team in the league this season but credit to Partick Thistle who have taken us right to the final game of the season, but credit to our boys who got it over the line.
“We’ve been victims of our own success with our packed schedule but winning a league and cup shows our consistency this season.”
