St Johnstone 1 Queen’s Park 0

Queen’s Park suffered a second successive defeat with a late header from Rebecca McMillan securing all 3 points for St Johnstone.

It was almost a dream start for the Spiders. Ellie Kane played forward straight from kick-off. Pressure from Abbi McDonald forced St Johnstone defender Hannah Clark to clear the ball only as for as Eleanor Smith who struck towards goal and had home goalkeeper Becky Cameron scrambling to make sure it wouldn’t be the opening goal of the game. Unfortunately for Queen’s, Smith’s strike dropped just wide of the post.

This chance put a spring in the Spiders step as the started the game with sustained pressure towards the St Johnstone goal. However, despite a handful of freekicks and corners, they were unable to carve out any clear cut chances.

In the 16th minute, Abby Callaghan found herself with space inside the box after a Caitlin McKee cross, but the onrushing Cameron done enough to put the in-form Spiders striker off and the ball rolled out of the pitch.

The home sides first real chance came in the 24th minute. A good cross from Ellie Cowie found Eirinn McCafferty at the back post. Thankfully for Queen’s she fired her shot high over the bar. St Johnstone were then gifted another chance almost instantly. Jodie Ovens picked up the ball on the edge of the box before playing it to Morgan Steedman. Her shot was calmly saved by Chloe Gibney.

The remainder of the half passed with no real event to note. Both teams battled to get a proper foothold in the game, but without any clinical edge to create any clear-cut chances.

Half Time: St Johnstone 0-0 Queen’s Park

The second half began in the same way the first half did with Queen’s Park taking the game to St Johnstone. Shots from McKee, Callaghan, Kane and a Leah Daly free-kick wasn’t able to give the Spiders their deserved goal.

In the 65th minute, St Johnstone had a chance to open the scoring from Brodie Greenwood’s cross, but Smith was there to block Morgan Steedman shot, giving St Johnstone a corner.

Similar to the first half, for all of Queen’s Park pressure, there was a lack of clear goal scoring opportunities with most of the possession coming in the middle of the park pushing towards the home goal. On the 71st minute, Callaghan was presented with a great opportunity but her strike was straight at Cameron. Moments later, Ciara Bonner picked out McKee from a deep freekick. McKee done well to turn and get her shot away, again Cameron was there to make the save.

The first goal of the game came in the 88th minute. A Nicole Carter freekick was met by the head of Rebecca McMillan to give the home side the lead. Queen’s Park were unable to find a route back into the game and left Perth undeservedly emptyhanded.
